Family Repair Group: Foundation of Parenting
October 11, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeA 3-week skills building support group for parents or caregivers who have been court-ordered and are facing conflict, whether that be personal, interpersonal or societal. Learn to recognize your parenting strengths, how to manage stress, and how to handle parenting during conflict. Learn strategies to help navigate the preschool, elementary, and tween years.

FOUNDATION OF PARENTING: Explore your parenting style, tips and benefits for co-parenting, coping strategies for managing stress.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Take some time to investigate the parenting choices you make and learn whether they are connected to your values or they’re done out of habit. Learn to recognize the social-emotional development milestones for different ages of children and how to identify your preferred communication style, your co-parent’s, and your child’s. Finally, we will talk about different ways to cope with stress and challenges that help to create more harmony in our parent-child relationships and our co-parenting relationships.

STRENGTHENING PARENT-CHILD RELATIONSHIPS
WHAT TO EXPECT: We will talk about how your interactions with a co-parent affect your connection with your child, how to meet your child where they are developmentally and emotionally, what kinds of things you can do to enhance the relationship with your child so that you can weather challenges together, and how to set healthy personal boundaries.

CONSISTENT PARENTING & SETTING LIMITS – FOLLOW THROUGH WITH CONSEQUENCES
WHAT TO EXPECT: We will look at power-struggles and natural consequences and talk about the difference between punishment and discipline. We will explore how to co-parent with someone who has very different ideas about conflict and consequences, and how to identify which consequences are appropriate. Finally, we will talk about how to engage your child in conversations about learning from mistakes so that they are invested in changing their behavior when necessary.

DE-ESCALATION STRATEGIES FOR CHALLENGING SITUATIONS
WHAT TO EXPECT: Learn ways to prevent conflict from happening with your child and/or co-parent as well as identifying what your personal hooks/triggers/buttons are and how to create strategies for removing anger and fear from these situations. We will talk about disrespect and defiance and how to neutralize arguments as well as learning how to validate your child’s feelings and begin to relate to them in a way that feels supportive for them.
