Affirming Practices for Autistic Youth

April 5 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Free

This talk will delve into the concept of what it means to be “neurodivergent-affirming”. We will explore the medical and social models of disability and come to an understanding that autistic individuals are not broken, nor do they need to become “neurotypical.” We will explore common strengths found in autistic individuals and how we can capitalize these strengths. We will also explore some common challenges in autistic youth, including anxiety, theory of mind, double empathy bind and pathological demand avoidance.

Dr. Laurie Stephens is a developmental psychologist who has been working with children, teens, and young adults with autism for over 30 years. She currently serves as The Help Group’s Senior Director of Autism and Clinical Programs. Dr. Stephens provides individual and family therapy to neurodiverse clients as young as 3 years of age, though young adult. She also oversees all of the programming related to autism, including the schools and clinical programs. Dr. Stephens also oversees Kaleidoscope, a specialized program for LGBTQIA neurodivergent youth in addition to Kids Like Me, PLAN Center and the Training Department.

Lunch will be provided.
